Digital Art

Techinques
  • Pantograms
A panto gram is were you use a stylus and draw on the left and on the right it copys and enlarges perfectly.

  • Lithography
A painting technique that can be reproduced quictly to the same quality as the original.

  • Graphic Artwork
Drawing over a piece of artwork such as a photograph on a computer.

  • Equations/Codes
Some digital art is produced by a series of mathematical equations and codes such as Michael Noll.

  • Digital Manipulation
Combining images digitally such as Lillian Schwartz.

Research

Artist's have cheated by using digital means for years such as artists using camera obscura/lucida's as well as pantograms this the start of digital art. Alot like photography digital art came into it's own category of art when artists began using computers and digital aids such as a stylus this made it possible to draw an image onto a computer screen, this helped out with making exact copies of the originals quickly and precisely. As computers developed more ways of creating art became apparent such as digital manipulating images such and the Mona, Leo this combines both images and makes it appear they fit perfectly next to one and other, also by using codes digital artists managed to created series of lines created by codes and mathematical equations which creates a minimalistic but abstract image. Now modern art is filled with digitally produced artwork both realistic and abstract.

eBoy

eBoy is a German design company and is well know for being digital artist's who create art to capture there childhood memory's of computer games. eBoy generated this image digitally on line. eBoy is know for creating online cityscape such as Dublin which coke a cola used for an advertisement city would look like from above image's were taken of Dublin from above so they had an idea of what the city looks like to help them created the final image. other work eBoy makes is not only online but they create prints too. The company have also created ties with other design company's from around the world and are created contracted works for companies. eBoy makes there digital images by colouring the pixels that is why there work looks as if it is all created by blocks.

photography

Techniques

  • Bokeh
Intentional use of blurring.
  • Chiaroscuro
Dramatic use of dark and light in a piece of artwork.
  • Intersection of threes
Is a grid and the center is similar to a view finder the image looks better when the subject is off center and along one of the lines.
  • Cropping
This is were you remove part of the image to change the subject of the the photo such as the image of the moving car in the slide show. Cropping can also be used to remove part of an image which is not wanted.

Research

The first type of photography was to make an image appear on a piece off paper to draw by using a series of lenses these cameras where called camera obsucura and camera lucida. The reason that photography picked up is because with a camera you could capture a image or a significant moment easily rather than having to paint it. Using a camera was also useful for sculptors as the could just take a photograph of their work and show people it without having to bring the sculpture with them or show people the sculpture in person. As the years past photography became an form of art in its own right as it was made possible to alter images such as using chemicals and more recently photoshop. Photographers also started to show their images in different ways such as David Hockney started creating montages with lots of separate images similar to Jeff Wall.

Jeff Wall

Jeff walls photograph of three people walking down a street shows language of art in his photograph by capturing moments that could mean something in this photograph it is showing racism. Jeff wall is Canadian who sells his pieces of work for great amounts of money. Some of the skills he uses in his work is depth of field as the focus of the image is close to the lens but the photograph carries on down the street as well as bokeh to focus on the couple and the other person stood to the left , Jeff wall also uses the rule of thirds as the people are stood in the intersections this photograph was taken in North America. This image is also made up of lots of smaller image as his usually exhibits his work at a large scale, each part of the image is taken with a 8x10 camera.

Sculpture

Prosess of creating statues
  • Cast - using a mold
  • Carving- using hammer and chisel
  • Assemblage - assembling different objects
  • Found object
  • Industrially - manufactured
  • Made in landscape
Materials

sculpture's are made from materials such as:
  • Wood
  • stone
  • bone
  • ivory
  • clay
  • metal's
Research
Statues have been around for over 10,000 years this is apparent because one or the earliest statue that has been found is a hand carved fertility symbol which is believed to be around 10,0000 to 40,000 years old. The reason why it is more common to find statues instead of prehistoric paintings is because it was easier to make as all you would need is something to shape an object whereas to create a painting you would need some form of pigment (paint). Another reason why sculptures or more common is that a bronze warrior was found in a submerged in a shipwreck if the statue had been a painting it would not have lasted the from 460BC to 450BC. As years went by sculpture was changing such as in the 19th century Auguste Rodin began creating realism using clay and by the 20th century sculptors started being interested in the creating not the meaning of their sculptures.

David
I have chosen Michael Angelo's David it is a marble hand carved statue that represents David from the biblical story of David and Goliath it was later revealed that it showed the civil liberties in the Florentine republic whilst there was conflict with other Italian states and stood 17 ft tall. The statue was made during the Italian renaissance between 1501-1504 it is still shown in Florence in the at palazzo della signoria. Michael Angelo chose to portray David in the nude to show how it was David who stood up to Goliath and had nothing to do do with materialistic items such as the sling shot he had used in the biblical story also he was shown naked because at the time it was conventional to make a nude sculpture similar to other sculptures at the time.

Painting

Techniques

  • Surface and stretch
Without a primer paint stains the canvas immediately and permanently. Without being stretched the canvas would move whilst painting.

  • Glazes matt and gloss
A gloss varnish makes colours appear more vibrant and bright. A matt varnish makes colours duller. The finish given by different glazes can be chosen to reflect the subject matter.

  • Chiaroscuro
The play of light and dark in a painting.
  • Impasto
Describes the thickness of paint used.

Summary of lesson
In this lesson of contextual studies we had been looking at painting and the different types of methods and techniques that can be used by painters. early painters who created wall paintings around the world have things in common with modern day artists such as Banksy as they both apply paint to walls.  Artists also borrow work of other artists such as Banksy borrowed the idea of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa and added his own twist which was an RPG on her shoulder. We also looked at other artist such as Van Eych his painting shows depth which was not very common in his time because most images were 2D with a view exceptions.

Banksy - Mona Lisa
Banksy's street art of the Mona Lisa with an RPG is a 2 dimensional painting on concrete in London and created in 2006, Banksy's work was sold for £57600. I think that Banksy's street art expresses anarchism as he has altered one of the most famous paintings and put a new light on it. This painting can also represent current affairs as during the time this graffiti was produced was during the war in Afghanistan as Banksy also raises political issues in his art. Banksy's version of of the Mona Lisa is just as original of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa even though the basis of Banksy's Mona Lisa is from Da Vinci's.
